WACO, TX (December 17, 2024)--With more than 22 years of teaching experience, Dr. Melissa King-Knowles has been named Waco ISD’s new deputy superintendent. King-Knowles currently serves the Tomball ISD School Support Office-Secondary Education.

“I believe that leadership is about service, and I am committed to serving this district with integrity, collaboration, and an unwavering dedication to our shared vision of success. Together, we can achieve great things for our students and community,” King-Knowles said. “Over the years, I have witnessed the remarkable impact that strong, collaborative leadership can have on our schools and students. I look forward to working alongside our talented educators, supportive families, and dedicated community members to continue building on the legacy of excellence that makes Waco ISD such a special place.”

King-Knowles has more than 14 years of experience as an administrator in K-12 public education and also served as adjunct faculty at both the University of Texas-Austin and Texas State University. She earned her doctoral degree from Lamar University in Beaumont, her Master of Arts Degree from Texas State University, and her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Southwest Texas State, now known as Texas State University.

Waco ISD Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Spicer said the district is excited to welcome King-Knowles as the new deputy superintendent.

“With more than two decades of experience in public school education, Dr. King-Knowles brings a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and heart for doing what it takes to achieve student success,” Spicer said. “Her proven track record as a committed and highly qualified administrator makes her an invaluable addition to our team. We are truly fortunate to have her expertise helping guide our district, and we look forward to the positive impact she will have on Waco ISD.”

King-Knowles is Spicer’s first hire to the district leadership team since she joined the district in early October. King-Knowles replaces Dr. Josie Gutierrez. King-Knowles assumes her new position in Waco ISD immediately following the holiday break on January 6.

“My focus will remain steadfast on ensuring that we continue using our wisdom to work wonders, providing every student the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally every day,” King-Knowles said. Together, we will strengthen partnerships, elevate student achievement, and enhance the supports that empower our teachers and staff to be their best.”
